Horses are another animal project on our farm. I first saw draft ponies on the glaciers in Austria 30 years ago. So when we had a place for horses we looked at breeds and settled on Norwegian Fjords. We brought the first filly to Maryland in 1984, and it has grown from there. These ponies are said to be the first domesticated breed of horse, longer than recorded history. Fjords are hardy, easy keepers, who are strong and versatile, patient and sensible as well as friendly and people oriented. They learn quickly and enjoy work. We have horses of golden dun color with white mane and tail and black dorsal stripe (known as brown dun) as well as a more unusual gray (grulla) dun. We drive and ride the ponies for pleasure while our daughter, Valentine, rides them for competition, fox hunting, and pony club. They are truly a pleasure to be around.
